Arco Iris is participating in Oregon Battle of the Books for the third year in a row. New for this year, students will participate in both the 3rd-5th grade and 6th-8th grade divisions. Your child should be bringing home an information sheet with a permission form this week.
Not familiar with OBOB?
Students read books off the annual OBOB list and then compete in a school-wide tournament answering questions about the books. The tournaments resemble the Jeopardy game show. The winning team moves on to the Regional competition (set for March 2015). Top teams from Regionals move onto a state competition in Salem (Saturday April 11, 2015). For more details, check out their FAQ Page.
What are the books this year? And how many are there?
- Grades 3-5 list can be found HERE. There are 16 titles.
- Grades 6-8 list can be found HERE. There are 16 titles.
A note from OBOB: “These titles are selected with a wide range of reading levels and maturity in mind. You may feel that the content and/or theme of one or two of these titles are inappropriate for your child. We recommend that you read and discuss these books with your child. A book that stretches a child’s thinking is a great opportunity to discuss world events and your family’s values.”
If your child would like to participate, please fill out and sign the permission form and have your child return it to his/her English teacher (Maestra Ansari or Maestra Serrao) by November 5, so that we can form teams and start reading! This is an extracurricular activity, so reading and practices will be organized by each team during non-school hours. For more OBOB details and the reading lists for each group, check out the official OBOB website. If you have any questions, please email Jen Osawa or Minta Rudys.
