Friday Updates – September 19, 2014

JogaThon Banner

The Jog-a-thon is here! Your kids have been asking. It’s almost time….  Jog-a-thon 2014 is just 2 weeks away. Join us for one of the best events of the year, our school wide Fall fundraiser, the Jaguares Jog-a-thon! The location has changed, but the goal has not. We are working as a community to raise money to support Arco Iris School. Details are coming home with your student today and are posted on the jog-a-thon page HERE.  Envelopes and pledge sheets will be sent home next week, but are linked on the jog-a-thon page if you want to get started. New this year – online giving at  https://arcoiris.ejoinme.org/jogathon2014

IMPORTANT REMINDER! School starts at 8:30 a.m.! We continue to have a large number of students arriving after 8:30 a.m. every day. Please be sure your child is at school and at their desk by 8:30 a.m. Not only are late arrivals disruptive for our office, the entire class, and the teacher, they negatively impact every students’ learning time. Thank you for your help.

Volunteer Update – Speaking of Jog-a-thon, it is fast approaching and we need a small army of volunteers to help. We have a need for classroom volunteers at least 6 per class as well as people to help set up and take down the event.  Please check www.parentbooker.com for all volunteer needs.

Apparel Sales – All apparel sale forms should be in by September 19, 2014.  No late orders accepted. Here, you can find the forms and online payment: Spirit Wear Order Form. If you have any questions, please email Sarah Coakley. Spirit Wear can be worn on the last school Friday starting in October. We look forward to seeing our Jaguar pride!

Classroom volunteers – We ask that all parents wait until back to school night before they help in the classroom. This gives the teachers time to get to know their children and better assess their volunteer needs. Volunteers must be scheduled with the teacher in order to help out that day.

Room Parents – We are still collecting names of persons interested in being a room parent.  If this is something you might be interested or want to know more please email fundraising@arcoirisschool.org. We are still in need of a volunteer for Maestra Ocasio.   All room parents will be decided by the teacher in the classroom. We are looking to place room parents by back to school night.

Where can I find out about volunteer opportunities? All of our volunteer needs will be posted on www.parentbooker.com. This is a sight to check often as we always have a need for someone to lend us a hand. All parents are required to have a background check in order to volunteer. You can find out more regarding background checks by visiting our Volunteer Page.

IMPORTANT School Board Announcement – Congratulations Christie Cesar, who was appointed last night to the Arco Iris School Board. Christie replaces Vicky Money, who resigned from the school board over the summer. Christie was our middle school science teacher last year and has two children attending Arco Iris. Please take a moment to welcome Christie to our team and to thank her for her continued dedication and hard work toward the success of our school. You will see her at the Jog-a-Thon!

IMPORTANT School Board Announcement – The Arco Iris School Board has formed a committee to research middle school options for Arco Iris. The committee includes: 2 board members, 1 school staff person and 3 PTO members. The committee will be meeting bi-weekly with the goal to have a recommendation submitted to the Board on or before their meeting on Nov 20th.

All of the committee meetings that will be open to the public: September 22, October 8, October 22, November 6, and November 19. All meetings are at the school at 6:45 pm.

The committee is researching several issues related to the middle school including: physical space requirements for students, # of additional classrooms needed, location of middle school and whether Arco Iris wants to be considered an “option school” within BSD for Middle school (this is a complicated issue, especially considering our Charter Agreement).

Upcoming Events:

  • September 19th – Mazama Lodge (Tonight!)
  • September 22nd – Middle School board committee meeting (6:45 pm)
  • September 23rd – Back to School Night (6:30-8:00)
  • September 26th – School Picture Day
  • October 3rd – Jog-A-Thon
