Friday Update – May 16, 2014

It has been a busy couple of weeks, and we have several things to cover before the school year ends.

One of our volunteer needs is help with inventory. To use our limited funds wisely we need to check what books and supplies we already have. If you have an hour or two please sign up to help Perla get our inventory under control.

Supply Request:
The 1st through 4th grade classes are in need of fabric paint in all colors by this Tuesday, May 20th. If you have some at home you are can send in, or are willing to purchase and donate a container or two, please send them in with your child to give to their teacher. Thank you for helping!

Principal Coffee:
Tuesday, May 20th from 8:30 am – 9:30 am. Principal Jan Smith will start this coffee hour by introducing our topic of Common Core State Standards, which will be explored and explained more in-depth by Maestras Stacy Serrao and Marybeth Cottle. Don’t miss what will certainly be and interesting and educational coffee hour!

Field Day:
Friday, May 23rd. We will have use of the field at Fir Grove Elementary behind our school for Field Day for the 1st through 4th grade classes. We have lots of active, fun, and funny things planned for your kids and need lots of help managing the day’s events. There are two shifts for the day, and folks who can help with both shifts would be greatly appreciated. Sign up to help here. Field day for the 5th through 7th grades will be the same day but at a different location, and all volunteer shifts have been filled.

Wrapping things up:

The last chance to turn in boxtops for the 2013-14 school year is May 30th.

PTO By-law Updates: 
As the year comes to a close, the PTO is working hard to get their by-laws updated to cover the changes this year has brought to the organization. On the last day of school, June 13th we will have our last PTO meeting and we will vote on the suggested changes to the by-law. Please review the suggested by-law changes and direct any suggestions or concerns to

2014-15 PTO: Secretary needed
The PTO needs help. Our secretary position grew this year, and we need someone with a little more time. Little things like our email needs to be checked. You do not need to answer any of the emails, just forward them to the appropriate party. This person would also take notes at the monthly meetings, submit approved minutes to the blog.

New Calendar for next year:
We have an approved calendar for next year. There are some changes you will want to know about. Please review the 2014-2015 Arco Iris Calendar to see the changes (like no late start days). We will have a PTO calendar out soon.

We have several activities planned in the next few weeks and months, so mark your calendars now and plan to join other Arco Iris families for these fun community events:

Picnic in the Park – Sunday, June 1st, from 3:00pm – 7:00 pm at Schiffler Park. Pack a picnic dinner and join us for a giant Arco Iris play date in this recently renovated beautiful park located just blocks from the school. We have the pavilion and picnic tables reserved and are looking forward to seeing you there!

Hillsboro Hops Baseball Game – Thursday, July 3rd, at 7:05 pm. Join other Arco Iris families in our reserved section of the stadium to cheer on the Hops as they will surely defeat the Everett AquaSox. This game will conclude with an amazing fireworks show that alone is worth the price of admission. Seats are $11 each and to secure your spot at the game now please drop your check, made out to Arco Iris, in the PTO drop box outside the office door. Your tickets will be held at will call the night of the game, so if you need your tickets held in a name other than the name on your check please note that on the memo line. See you at the game!

Mazamas Lodge Overnighter – Friday, September 19th. The historic Mazamas Lodge on Mt. Hood near the turnoff for Timberline Lodge will be all ours for the night and is the perfect setting for enjoying the best that the mountain has to offer in September. There are many hiking trails and opportunities for exploring the area, including huckleberry picking at the peak of its season on the mountain. The cost per person is $30, which includes lodging for the night, dinner Friday night, and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. The lodge capacity is 70, but they allow tent camping on the grounds outside the lodge if we exceed capacity or by choice. So reserve your spots now by dropping a check for the number of attendants in your family, made out to Arco Iris, in the PTO drop box outside the office and please write “Mazamas” in the memo line.

Technical Snafu:
Last weeks blog posting was some how lost. Here is a brief recap:

Staff appreciation week was amazing. The teachers loved everything we did and felt very appreciated.
