Summer Reading Assignments

Buenos Dias a las familias de Arco Iris,

Summer is here! Time for sun! Time for sleeping in late! Time for enjoying a good book!

During the summer, all students (that includes new students!) have been asked to choose and read one book of their choice. When they finish, they must answer several questions about the book’s main events and whether they would recommend this book to a friend.

Afterwards, they can choose to do one creative project such as create a fully page comic strip of the story’s main events, create a dioramma or a book cover. Students will be asked to bring their written responses and art projects to English class on the first day of school. The hardcopy form was sent home with your child on the last day of school. We have included them online also. See the attached forms for more detail.  Summer English Homework

By doing this, we’re encouraging students to continue practicing their reading skills and enjoyment for reading.

Also, the wonderful Niki Taylo has put together a Jaguar’s Read form for the summer months. Kids can log their hours for their English homework, too. Remember that Spanish reading counts for double the time! Jaguar’s Read Calendar

If you’re looking for quality literature, I’ve included a number of websites that feature award-winning children’s books. Please check out the Pura Belpre Award-winning books, which honor one Latino/a writer each year. You can find these links also on the English homework worksheet.

Enjoy your summer! Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Gracias! I think these are great ideas! As a parent I appreciate the thoughtfulness of giving the children something to do over the summer that is actually due! 🙂
